The Bodhisattwa Trio is an Experimental Jazz Fusion/Avant Garde outfit from Kolkata, India, which believes in expressionism, social reflection and spontaneous creation. Drawing influences from life, the universe and everything, the trio, with Bodhisattwa Ghosh on Guitars, Premjit Dutta on Drums and Shonai on Keyboards & Synth Bass delivers a mix of original instrumental compositions with special emphasis on harmonic and rhythmic expansion, theme and variation, virtuosity and spontaneous improvisation.

Formed in 2012, the trio has under their belt a 4-track EP “Fuzzy Logic” and 2 full length instrumental albums “Intersections” and “Heart of Darkness”. While they have successfully toured Europe (England, Slovenia, Croatia, France) and Bangladesh in 2014 following their debut album “Intersections”, “Heart of Darkness”, launched in May 2016, has received critical acclaim throughout India and abroad, being the highest selling independent album in India for the month of June 2016, the “Album of the year 2016” by Mid-Day, Mumbai, “One of the top 10 albums of 2016” by Rolling Stone India and The Hindu, Bangalore. Over 2 promotional tours of their 2nd album “Heart of Darkness”, “The Bodhisattwa Trio” have played in venues across India like Blue Frog (Mumbai,Pune,Bangalore),B-Flat (Bangalore),Max Mueller Bhavan (Kolkata), The Piano Man Jazz Club (New Delhi) to name a few. In November 2017, the trio performed in Europe covering 8 gigs across Germany, Poland, Croatia and Lithuaniua, ending their tour as the only Indian Artist to perform at the Vilnius Mama Jazz Festival in Vilnius, Lithuania, performing original compositions from their 2nd album as well as newer tunes which will make up their 3rd album, set to be recorded in June 2018.

Bodhisattwa Ghosh (Electric Guitar, Compositions)

A disciple of Indian Guitar legend AmytDatta, Bodhisattwa is essentially a Blues musician who is constantly looking to stretch the boundaries of music.

An endorsee of Fender Guitars,USA and Ernie Ball Guitar Strings, USA ,he has worked as a guitar player/composer since 2002 and played in major venues/festivals across the globe including National Theatre,Oslo (Norway), San Jose Mc Energy Convention Centre (USA), Bird’s Eye Jazz Club, Basel (Switzerland), Blue Frog, Mumbai (India), Ravi Shankar Institute of Performing Arts, New Delhi (India),Goethe Institute (Kolkata), High Spirits (Pune), B-Flat (Bangalore), Russian Cultural Centre (Dhaka), Red Shift(Dhaka), EMK center(Dhaka), JatraBiroti (Dhaka), USIS(Kolkata), The Piano Man(Delhi) etc. to name a few and collaborated with reputed musicians from around the world.

Bodhisattwa has been an integral part of critically acclaimed Ethno-Jazz outfit “Kendraka”, and Electronic/Alternative outfit “Zoo”. Apart from his instrumental Jazz Rock Trio “The Bodhisattwa Trio” with whom he has 2 albums “Heart of Darkness” and “Intersections” ,Bodhisattwa is currently a part of veteran vernacular Rock band “Lakkhichhara”and Grammy Award winning Tabla Player Pt.Tanmoy Bose’s World Music outfit “TaalTantra”.

Premjit Dutta (Percussion)

Premjit Dutta is a percussionist from Kolkata, India, trained in theory of music Grade 5 (ABRSM) and is a certified Grade 8 (TCL) Drummer. He has been teaching Drums at Calcutta School of Music (CSM) since 2008, Calcutta Centre for Communication and Creativity (C4) since 2007 and also works as a music educator/mentor at Modern High School. He has also been conducting workshops at various institutes and organizations throughout the country and is also a regular artist at All India Radio.

Studying Latin American music from veteran congueroMonojitDatta, he has been an integral part of Latin-Jazz band LOS AMIGOS with whom he performed across the country and abroad at distinguished festivals and venues including the prestigious Java Jazz Fest 2011, alongside Carlos Santana, George Benson, George Duke, Four Play.

He is an endorsee of Zildjian International, SONOR Drums, VIC FIRTH sticks and REMO Drum Heads. Apart from THE BODHISATTWA TRIO , he is also a part of Latin-jazz outfit THE LATINATION and traditional jazz band 4-ON-A-SWING and with them he has toured most of the cities and venues across India and Nepal. He has played at distinguished festivals and venues in India and abroad like The Java Jazz Festival 2011(Jakarta), 59 Rivoli (Paris), Hostel Celica (Ljubljana, Slovenia), Boatel Marina (Reijka, Croatia), Congo Square Jazz Fest, PondyPartages (Pondicherry), Shisha Jazz Café (Pune), Blue Frog (Delhi/Mumbai/Pune/Bangalore), Mazda Hall (Pune) Osho Ashram Festival (Pune), Goethe Institute (Kolkata/Bangalore), High Spirits (Pune), B-Flat (Bangalore), Alliance Francaise (10 cities in India, Kathmandu, Bangladesh), Russian Cultural Centre (Dhaka), Red Shift(Dhaka), EMK center(Dhaka), JatraBiroti (Dhaka), USIS(Kolkata), The Piano Man(Delhi) , Delhi Art Festival’2016.

On more recent news, he was one of the ten international talents all over the world and the only Indian musician invited by the MUSIC BOARD BERLIN and POP-KULTUR FESTIVAL’2016, to participate in their seminar and festival in August-September ‘16 at Berlin, where he attended workshops and talks and also collaborated, recorded and performed with musicians from around the world.

Shonai (Keyboards & Synth Bass)

The ever-evolving Shonai enjoys his musical life as a performer, educator, composer andarranger. Born in a musicians’ family in Kolkata Shonai had got introduced to various genre of music in his childhood time. He started his training with learning Tabla and then moved to Piano in 1996. He has done Grade 6 in Classical Music in Piano from Associated Board of Royal
School of Music and Grade 8 in Jazz Piano from London College of Music. Shonai studied Jazz till the advanced level my himself with the help of a few world class Jazz musicians. In his 20years of performance life he has worked in every possible situations from solo to duet and from bands like trio, quartet and Quintet to Big Bands. Shonai being predominantly a contemporary and jazz Pianist has worked with Jazz stalwarts like Mr.Carlton Kitto, Mr.Andrew
Gracias, Mr.Lewis Hilt, Mr.Marcus Dengate, Mr. Clive Huse to name a few.

His performance life started with joining All India Radio as a junior artist in 1997. Where later he became a graded artist and has been continuing recording his solo piano recitals. In 2005 he joined Oberoi Grand Hotel as a solo Pianist. His performance career continued as solo, duets
and with bands in many prestigious venues like The Oberoi Grand, The Park, ITC Sonar, The Park Plaza etc. in Kolkata. He has also played extensively throughout India in festivals like GIANTS OF JAZZ (Delhi, Gurgaon), JAZZMATAZZ (Mumbai , Pune), JAZZMANDU (Nepal), Jam Steady BIG SUNDAY (Kolkata), Darjeeling Carnival and venues like Opus (Bangalore), The Humming Tree (Bangalore), Blue Frog, The Piano Man (Delhi), Trident (Rajasthan), NCPA Tata Theatre (Mumbai), Anti Social (Mumbai). Apart from these he has also played in several places in Northeast India and beyond, like Manipur, Assam, Shillong, Taj Tashi ( Bhutan ) and Dhaka Club (Bangladesh), which helped him to hone his skills and experiences.

Being a versatile musician Shonai had been a part of several bands with different genre of music like Blue Mist (pop), Orient Express (Latin), Carlton Kitto Jazz Ensemble (Jazz), Fast Forward (Funk-Jazz), Big Family (Blues), Bramhakhyapa (Bawl Jazz fusion) etc. Apart from these bands he used to work with many other bands and artists as a session musician. As an educator he has worked in several academic and music schools in Kolkata and in prestigious Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory.

Currently Shonai is a part of two trios, ABHIND (Abstract Jazz) and Bodhisatya Trio (Avantgarde rock fusion) and also is working on his own trio called The Shonai Collective. Where he is collaborating with various artists and touring the country. With this Collective he mostly does his own compositions and apart from the originals he covers a few popular tunes rearranged in his unique way. Beside travelling and performing he also is a Piano faculty of one of the best music schools of the town Calcutta School of Music.
